How to play My Word?

You are currently viewing How to play My Word?

In this article, you can read about the basic rules of the card game My Word and learn how to play. The object of the game is to collect the most cards.

You collect cards by spelling words. Shuffle the deck. The dealer, at whatever pace decides, flips over cards outward away from himself face up onto the table. Cards are placed next to each other not on top. As soon as any player can spell a word that is at least three letters long from the face-up letters available they call it out. If the word is spelled correctly and isn’t a proper noun, abbreviation, hyphenated, or utilizes an apostrophe, then the player takes the letters that form that word into a personal pile in front of them. Play continues until all cards have been flipped and no more words can be made. Whoever has the most cards wins.

If there is a discrepancy as to who called out a word first, the dealer decides. Cards with a question mark are wild and can be used as any one letter. Double letter cards can be used anywhere in the word so long as the two letters aren’t separated. You can simplify the game for younger players by allowing them to form two-letter words. Or, you can handicap more experienced players by requiring them to form words at least four letters long. Additionally, if players are calling out incorrect words too freely, on each occurrence every other player takes a card from the middle pile or the top of the draw deck if there are none.
